The warning has also been reissued to the West including places like Moulton, Trinity, and Decatur.
Instead of making new posts, think will just post updates here.
10:48 PM - a very small warning polygon has been issued to include Town Creek now too. In some ways, county-based warnings had their advantages back in the day. Took the special weather statement polygons off to avoid confusion. Because the map just gets too cluttered with multiple polygons that way.
10:56 PM - And here's another one. These storms decided not to wait on the main squall line later tonight or in the morning.
Actually no, that is a mistake . . . that popped up on Twitter out of order, and I posted before double-checking. Let's do a radar reset.
10:59 - All right, so we really only have the severe thunderstorm hugging the Madison/Lincoln County line, extends across the state line, and then the storm back in Lawrence County that ended up with two polygons, includes Town Creek and Moulton, storm moving generally toward Decatur and Trinity.
11:02 PM - This storm that is moving up into Tennessee now carries a tag noting that a tornado could possibly develop, as the storm is showing some rotation on radar. The rotation is broad, but it is a better safe than sorry thing.
11:07 - The main squall line is several hours to our West. By daybreak or so we should be dealing with it, at least Western counties of North Alabama and into Tennessee.
11:17 PM - The warning for Decatur and nearby communities has been reissued. The one in Tennessee has been let go, although they have a special weather statement still in effect for strong winds, but below severe limits.
11:20 - And now we have a separate warning polygon for that storm over Courtland.
11:22 - And now actually a new warning has come out in Tennessee, for communities like Pulaski, Cornersville, Frankewing, and Belfast. This is a pretty rural area of Tennessee, but hey, those people need to know too. Some of them probably have enough sense (and enough funds) to have a storm shelter. This only looks like straight-line winds though. Things were a little suspicious around Hazel Green earlier, some rotation showing up. But that weakened and the storm passed.
11:32 - That TN storm now has confirmed hail of quarter size, inch in diameter. The winds up to 60 mph are estimated from radar. The warning has been extended to include parts of Lincoln and Moore Counties.
The tan polygons you see (I turned those back on) are Special Weather Statements. They indicate storms that are strong enough to take note of but not at the criteria for a Severe Thunderstorm Warnings. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when a storm is thought to be an immediate threat to life and property because of damaging winds or large hail. Special Weather Statements just let you know that some significant weather is going on but is not bad enough to issue a Warning for. That even happens with winter weather, like if there's a chance of a little snow in the Winter but not enough to need any kind of watch, warning, or advisory.
Of course the Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are the yellow polygon boxes.
Even in these special weather statements, winds may gust up to 50 mph.
