Tornado Watch

Well this has escalated quickly. Note we do have a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Northern Wayne County in Tennessee. Also includes Lewis, Perry, and Hickman Counties up there. Hail up to two inches in diameter (a little more than golfball sized) and 60 mph wind gusts are possible with that supercell thunderstorm. And there have been numerous Tornado Warnings in Tennessee already.

4:27 PM - Ok and now that storm affecting Wayne County has been upgraded to a Tornado Warning, strong rotational velocity couplet showing up on radar.

Perry, Hickman, and Humphrey Counties are also under a Tornado warning. Golfball sized hail is possible with these storms in addition to them trying to produce a tornado.

Get into a small interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy house or other strong building if in the path of any of these.

4:38 - That possible tornado is moving between the towns of Hohenwald and Napier.

And that is the only remaining Tornado Warning in Tennessee for now. They have many Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, more than I care to enumerate at this time . . .

4:46 - Now that possible tornado is moving Northeast and affecting Lewis, Hickman, and Maury Counties in Middle Tennessee. People in Mount Pleasant and nearby should already be in shelter. People in places like Columbia and Spring Hill, be watching this and be ready to get to shelter within five minutes if you are under the warning later.

4:55 - And here's sort of the wide view. Another tornado warning for Dickson, Montgomery, and Houston counties further North in Tennessee. I'd take cover for these Severe Thunderstorm Warnings too, as the damaging winds along with hail up to the size of golfballs can be dangerous enough all by itself.

5:03 PM - And now in Northern TN, got a possible tornado moving toward Springfield, may also affect Greenbrier. This is Cheatham and Robertson Counties.

5:13 - And now that warning has been extended, the southern one, has been extended further into Maury County to include Columbia, sort of clips Spring Hill. Places Williamsport may also be affected.

I would not wait on this tornado to be confirmed. If in the polygon, get to a small room of a sturdy house, on the lowest floor, near the center, away from windows. If you have time, cover your body, especially your head.

5:18 - Watching that storm between Tupelo and Amory and also the stuff in Madison County north of Huntsville just in case that capping inversion can erode while we've still got daylight.

5:20 - Via Channel 5 in Nashville, Bree Sunshine Smith, one of these tornadoes had a funnel cloud reported by emergency management. I think it may be the one coming into Maury County. But I got confused whether it was that one or the one in Robertson County. Will see if I can check on that . . .

Ok that is the northern storm in Robertson County, and it was weather spotters that reported a funnel cloud with it.

I'd still take the one in Maury County seriously and stay in shelter, but when you get a visual confirmation, sometimes that underlines it, for the one further north.

5:26 - And a new Tornado Warning that includes Davidson County, TN. I'm not going to post every single one for way up in Tennessee, especially since we still have an after-midnight round coming for North Alabama and Southern Middle Tennessee, but since I'm already here . . . making note of the worst storms sometimes. And that one in Maury County looks really healthy, or I guess unhealthy for people in the path, nasty velocity couplet. Not seeing a debris signature so far, but I'd play it safe.

5:33 - And the Shoals Weather group has a visual of the wall cloud with this storm affecting Columbia. Credit where it's due.

5:36 - And the fun is nonstop. Nashville is now under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning and a Flash Flood Warning at the same time. So I definitely would not advise trying to drive through that mess. I'd stay put in a sturdy building for a while before driving home from work or school or whatever.

I think NewsChannel5 in Nashville may have the best look at the Columbia storm, which is at least trying to produce a tornado.

That tornado warning up in Robertson County was cancelled early, storm weakened.

5:44 - Tornado warning reissued for Columbia, Spring Hill, storm may clip Thompsons Station. So that's Maury, Williamson, Marshall, and Rutherford County as the storm moves Northeast.

5:46 - Getting quite a pronounced hook echo on this storm now. It looks like it is staying over mostly rural areas South of Spring Hill, but there is always a margin for error with radar. So all the way up to Thompson's Station, this is a nasty storm, lots of hail and wind even apart from the tornado.

And it IS a confirmed tornado now.

A trained spotter has confirmed a tornado with this.

And now we are seeing debris on radar, will post that shortly.

Get in a safe place and stay there. Cover your head. Small room, lowest floor, near the center of a sturdy house, away from windows.

5:50 - This confirmed tornado could be producing significant damage. So all the way up to Eagleville on the edge of the Tornado Warning polygon, I would stay sheltered and cover your body in case of falling or flying debris, especially your head. This is a serious situation.

5:53 - Here is a visual of the tornado. Don't fool around with this, and don't panic either. Get to a safe place and stay there. Let people know if you need to, if this is coming at them.

The National Weather Service in Nashville is calling this a TORNADO EMERGENCY now!

It's about as dangerous as it gets.

If you can, get to a storm shelter or the underground part of a basement. If you're sheltering on the ground floor of a sturdy house, use something to cover your head for extra protection. Get OUT of a mobile home before this gets to you!

It's crossing I-65.

5:56 - Here is a look at the polygon for this Tornado Emergency.

5:58 - And here's some video of the tornado.

6:07 PM - The Tornado Emergency is extended further East. Here's a good look at who needs to take shelter. This is one of those situations, if you can get to an underground shelter, or safe room, I would do it. Otherwise I'd go to a small room on the lowest floor of a strong house, near the center, away from windows. A hallway near the center is fine too. Cover your body in case of debris, especially your head. And get out of a mobile home. It is nowhere close to worth the risk with a tornado like this. This may be doing very significant damage and is extremely dangerous.

And I'll just tell you straight: This Nashville office is pretty laid-back when it comes to upgrading Tornado Warnings. If they say it's an emergency, you can bet your life they mean it.

6:13 - Emergency management has confirmed many structures damaged, think it was in Maury County.

Radar still showing everything we'd look for in a damaging tornado, supercell thunderstorm here. Got very large hail as well as the strong wind rotation, hook echo, and even a really strong Tornado Debris Signature.

Someone I know just had a fairly close shave with this tornado, though I'm pretty sure it went South of there, haven't heard from them. So if you can't get hold of someone up there, doesn't necessarily mean they got hit, I would imagine it has knocked out power for some people or maybe interrupted phone service. That can happen even if you are just close to a tornado in a really bad storm like this.

6:20 - You know, even people upstream in Murfreesboro, you are not under the warning yet, but go ahead and be getting ready. These kinds of storms tend to sustain a long time, and as Wes Wyatt posted, it is coming in that direction. They got hit by a tornado back in 2009, think it was on Good Friday. So people up there will remember. This tornado has already done significant damage along its path.

6:22 - At the moment, the storm appears to be in a weakening phase. But these kinds of tornadic supercells tend to cycle down and then ramp back up. And people in Murfreesboro need to be getting ready out of respect for the history of this storm.

6:32 - If anybody needs this tornado "sold" any more, check out this visual from when it passed near Spring Hill. I think it went just South of there.

6:39 - Ryan Hall also has a good stream going. I'm going to lay out of tracking the TN stuff since it is not near the AL state line. And things may get active here later, especially after midnight.

6:48 - The tornado is passing to the South of Murfreesboro, but they are clipped by the warning. This is the supercell that started in Northern Wayne County, and I just followed it. I keep seeing reports on Twitter of heavy damage in Maury County from this.

The weather is still rough close to this tornado. They have dropped the emergency tag for some time now, but please keep in mind that supercells can cycle up and down. Just because it weakens for a while doesn't mean it won't strengthen again.

The people I knew near the path are okay, just really shaken up by the close call. And I'm going to try to save my energy for whatever affects North Alabama/Southern Middle Tennessee later tonight.
