Severe T-Storm Watch

6:10 PM - Most of North Alabama was kept out of this watch. But it does include Cullman, Walker, Winston, and Blount Counties.

That cluster of storms between Tupelo and Amory (MS) is the only thing at severe limits for now. This looks like just summer convection where some stronger storms cook up in the heat and humidity and can produce enough hail or strong wind gusts to briefly reach severe limits. We're not worried about tornadoes or any kind of widespread severe weather with this.

But the Storm Prediction Center has coordinated with the National Weather Service in Birmingham because they think the chance is enough to justify a watch in Central Alabama. NWS Huntsville covers Cullman County, and that's the only of their 14 counties they coordinated to put in the watch. I guess it's always good to have a heads-up in case something happens, especially for people in mobile homes.

Ideally if you get a severe thunderstorm warning, you want to be in an interior room (no windows) on the lowest floor of a sturdy house.

But at the least, you want to stay inside, away from windows or anything that would easily conduct electricity (i.e. attract lightning).

6:33 - This is definitely scattered summer storms ahead of a mesoscale convective system back in Arkansas. They are firing up around sundown. Most are staying below severe limits, but some may produce severe level hail or winds, so we have this watch for mostly Central Alabama until 1 AM.

6:36 - This part of the storm cluster between Hamilton, Brilliant, and Natural Bridge has prompted a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Marion County until 7:15 PM CDT. Wind gusts up 60 mph and quarter-sized hail are possible in that storm.

6:56 - And that warning has been cancelled as the storm has weakened below severe criteria.

7:33 PM - And now we have a warning that includes Oneonta and Locust Fork, where again, winds could gust to 60 miles per hour and hail could get to about quarter size.

7:35 - And here's the broad view. Most the thunderstorms are in Blount, Cullman, Walker, Winston, Marion, and Fayette Counties. And most of these are under severe limits.
