Tornado Warning (Includes Huntsville - CONFIRMED)

 Updates here as needed . . .

6:09 PM - If in the path of this tornado: Leave a car or a mobile home for a sturdier house or other strong building.

In that sturdy house, get into a small central room (or hallway) on the lowest floor. Stay away from windows. Put as many walls between you and the outside as you can. And cover your body as best you can, especially your head/neck. If you have a safety helmet like for a bike or football, wear that helmet. This tornado was confirmed, and it has the potential to do significant damage. It is that kind of atmosphere in this area right now. So we have to take this seriously and take the best precautions that are within our means.

Obviously if you can get into the underground part of a basement or a storm shelter, that is best.

Gerald Satterwhite who is off-duty for NWS Birmingham saw this tornado but then saw it apparently dissipate. Situations like this, storms can cycle down and then cycle up again quickly. So let's assume this is down on the ground or about to get that way again. And let's all try to protect each other. This is fairly serious business this evening.

Doing the right things here could save a lot of people from being seriously hurt, or it could even save some lives. So please do the right things, and encourage the people you know to take the best shelter they can too.

6:13 - The tornado is crossing I-65 now.

6:14 - Okay, a spotter has confirmed, this thing was BACK ON THE GROUND South of Athens.

TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY. ANYWHERE IN THIS POLYGON. PLEASE.

This is coming up on the city of Madison.

It is past Athens.

6:17 - The tornado will be near UAH and Redstone Arsenal in the next 15 minutes.

Latest from NWS Huntsville says emergency management has confirmed this tornado.

It is safe to say we have a confirmed tornado here.

It is coming up on County Line Road. But really everybody in this polygon needs to get to shelter AND STAY THERE. Cover your head and neck in some way - helmet is best, but whatever you have.

In a basement, hopefully you can be in the underground part, or at least try to be away from windows and up under something sturdy like a workbench, table, desk, or set of stairs.

It's been a while since Huntsville was in the general path of a confirmed tornado, and we have to take this seriously because of how many people are in the path. There's no way to know exactly where it is until somebody has it on camera. But this is a serious situation. Respect that polygon and stay sheltered.

Hopefully everybody in the city of Madison is already sheltered. It is coming up on there very quickly now.

6:22 - Really everyone in this polygon needs to be in their tornado shelter for now.

TORNADO EMERGENCY!

New post for that.
