Take shelter and gather more information from a safe place.
7:31 PM - This is the same storm that produced the tornado that affected Madison and Northern Huntsville. Have not heard of any injuries yet, but structural damage has been confirmed, certainly on Balch Road, I forget exact location, but I remember seeing that road a lot when I lived up there.
7:32 - And this southern storm is looking worse now. Really you have to respect any Tornado Warning, especially in an environment like this evening.
7:35 - So we've got two tornadoes like trains on a track. One behind the other and slightly South.
7:37 - Meanwhile we can give the all clear to some places the squall line is past, like Wayne and Lawrence Counties in Tennessee and areas West of there in Tennessee. The counties in yellow (the rest of us) remain under a Tornado Watch. I think the new one that came out (when things got so busy) goes until 1 AM tentatively.
7:40 - It is important to stay sheltered for both of these warnings. These are our only two Tornado Warnings. We do have another Severe Thunderstorm Warning back there that includes Decatur. It'd be good to be in a safe place for that one too. We have to take these storms seriously until this long evening/night is over.
7:43 - Owens Crossroads, Paint Rock, Grant, nearby communities, stay sheltered from this possible tornado.
7:46 - Sounds like in Harvest there were some homes collapsed, their volunteer Fire Dept. That's the storm in Jackson County now. It may be in a weakening phase, but we can't count on that. Stay sheltered. Let's zoom back in on that one now.
7:47 - The rotation does look broad for the moment, but you have to respect the history of this storm and the warning polygon. Especially from about Hollywood up to Stevenson, I hope everyone is sheltered.
7:49 - Not trying to scare anyone, but the pictures and videos coming out of the tornado that moved through Madison and (it sounds like) Harvest and perhaps Northern Huntsville was a large, wedge-shaped tornado that did a good bit of damage. So far I haven't heard of any injuries, and if it stays that way, that's . . . wonderful news. We may hear of injuries later, but so far the news is good that way. This was a fairly bad tornado, too soon to say how bad. We won't know that until tomorrow and perhaps several days, when surveys are done.
But that's to let you know, this situation was and is serious. If you get a warning, you need to get to a safe place. The night is not over. And this atmosphere is volatile enough to support severe thunderstorms and at times tornadoes. Sounds like somebody did get one that was unusually significant. But like I say, we won't really know that for at least another day, probably several days to fully assess the damage and how this tornado compares to others. That's not what is important right now.
The important thing is that we keep that injury count as low as possible. If we can get by with zero, man, wouldn't that be a win for an event like this? Sometimes we can.
7:54 - Here's the broad view of where a broken squall line is trying to form.
There is a new Tornado Warning in this same general area, but the polygon is different enough I'm going to make a new post so that you can see the full text of the warning . . . before I start throwing up radar with overlapping polygons, some of which are getting ready to expire anyway.
