Looks like the area was expanded because of the potential for a mix of ice accumulation.
2:58 PM - Governor Ivey has issued a state of emergency that includes Cullman, Walker, and Winston counties.
If you would like to check on road conditions, here is a link for Alabama and one for Tennessee.
Here is a good piece that Jim Stefkovich wrote for the Alabama EMA earlier today. It is not so much that we'll have a lot of snow in North Central Alabama, but that the mix of just enough snow and ice will cause travel hazards for many places.
Snow is already starting to cover the ground in Memphis, and showers of snow and freezing rain are moving through Northern Mississippi, some of the snow (in blue) starting to mix with rain (green) in Northwest Alabama. And yes, the pink color is the freezing rain.
5:45 PM - Mixed wintry precipitation is moving into Northwest Alabama, more widespread now, from Mississippi. And some of what is showing up as rain on radar has fallen as snow, at least in Huntsville, I noticed.
Three inches at 5:11pm in east Fayetteville! Still coming down! 🥶☃️@CharlesPeekWX @spann @tropicalupdate @ReedTimmerAccu pic.twitter.com/3ZYtLHcPhu
— kookie taylor (@kookiemtaylor) January 14, 2024
And they already have three inches of snow at Fayetteville, TN. The snowfall like always will not be uniform. Some spots will get heavier showers of snow (or ice), and some will get less than most their neighbors. It's always that way even in a major winter storm. This looks like a routine winter storm by our region's standards. But even a regular one like this, we don't get all that often. So it's a novelty.
6:12 PM - And it looks like it's all snow up in Tennessee, but on the Alabama side, the precipitation mode is more mixed, probably including some sleet and freezing rain. Not seeing reports of ice yet, but it's a cold Sunday evening when it's just getting started, holiday weekend. Might take a while to get reports.
1:40 PM Radar Update: Precipitation is starting to move in! Temperatures are in the low to mid 30s across the area and will drop below freezing this evening. We are getting reports of sleet in NW AL - what are you seeing? pic.twitter.com/zXKm5xChh3
— NWS Huntsville (@NWSHuntsville) January 15, 2024
And here we go, the Weather Service in Huntsville is starting to see sleet reports out of Northwest Alabama. I'd rather see that than freezing rain, because the latter is when we can start to have problems with damage to trees and power lines. While sleet usually just changes over to snow fairly quickly.
6:21 - They just posted another update saying reports of some slick bridges and roads. So . . . it's on now.
The event is underway.
