Take cover whether in this, the other tornado warning, or even in the severe thunderstorm warnings. We've seen a fair amount of damage tonight in scattered spots along and ahead of this line. We won't know until tomorrow or Monday if it's straight-line wind or tornado damage, a lot of it. But please play it safe.
1:16 - And we've got another one. Since these are spinning up very quickly in the same general area, I'm just going to add to this post rather than have tons of posts for separate tornado warnings in the same general area.
This newest possible tornado circulation threatens places like Section, Rainsville, Henagar, up to Valley Head, Ider, Flat Rock, and nearby communities in Southeast Jackson, Northeast Marshall, and Northern Dekalb Counties.
If you are in Madison, Morgan, Cullman, or Walker Counties, and points West, your severe weather threat is over, also for places in Tennessee where the squall line has passed through. The Tornado Watch is being cancelled out behind this squall line, and there will be no more severe weather issues behind this squall line in our region.
The only bordering TN county that is still under the Tornado Watch is Franklin, which is still included in a Tornado Warning.
And I was going to show the updated watch/warning map, but the graphics are lagging for some reason.
1:25 - If you are behind this squall line, you're good for the night. But along and ahead of it, in any of these severe thunderstorm warnings, please stay sheltered. If you are in one of the tornado warnings, of course you want to stay sheltered. But this line has been pretty rough tonight, enough that I'd rather people not take chances even with the severe thunderstorm warnings. I think it was Kevin Laws from the Weather Service in Birmingham who said when this event got going to treat severe thunderstorm warnings as seriously as tornado warnings. And he was right, or whoever said it, for more than just the area they cover. It proved to be true for Huntsville's coverage area as well.
1:31 - The tornado warning for Franklin County, TN is being allowed to expire.
1:34 - I know that we have specific Tornado Warnings, and while I'd respect those anywhere in the polygons, I'd also advise anyone in the path of this squall line as it is still pushing through Northeast Alabama to remain in a safe place until sure the squall line is past you and/or your warning (even if it is "only" a Severe Thunderstorm Warning) has been allowed to expire. There has been a fair amount of damage from these storms even though they've happened during the dark hours, and in a situation like this, it'll take a day or two to sort out how much was really from tornadoes or straight-line winds. Sometimes it takes several days. For now just play it safe. Either one could harm you, but if you go to a small central room on the lowest floor of a sturdy house, not a mobile home, well away from windows, you'll be fine.
1:39 - It's been a hectic night for some people. I know of one couple who were out tonight because it was a Saturday, babysitter for the kid, and they had to shelter at the same time as telling the babysitter about it. That's why I said tonight was bad timing. But I haven't heard of any injuries with these storms so far. So hopefully the warning process worked well. Going to start a new post for severe weather statements on tornado warnings. This line is moving into Georgia shortly.
