...NWS Damage Survey for 6/25/2023 Storm Event...

.North Fairview Wind Swath...

Rating:                 TSTM/Wind

Estimated Peak Wind:    70 mph

Path Length /statute/:  1.4366 miles

Path Width /maximum/:   10.0 yards

Fatalities:             0

Injuries:               0

Start Date:             06/25/2023

Start Time:             03:38 PM CDT

Start Location:         2 NNW Fairview / Cullman County / AL

Start Lat/Lon:          34.2733 / -86.7028

End Date:               06/25/2023

End Time:               03:40 PM CDT

End Location:           3 NW Fairview / Cullman County / AL

End Lat/Lon:            34.2773 / -86.7254

Survey Summary:

A localized damaging wind swath extended along County Road 1488

in Cullman County north of Fairview, AL. The swath caused minor

damage to the roof of chicken houses and then caused a few small

tree limbs to snap before ending just before County Road 1527.

While there were several mobile and manufactured homes in the

swath, no thresholds of visible damage were noted by the survey

team. Due to the sporadic nature of the damage and small limbs of

trees impacted, there was not sufficient evidence to evaluate

this as tornadic damage. Additional damages in the area were

identified by EMA as pre-existing damage from previous events.

Thank you to Cullman EMA for assisting us with the storm survey!

Severe Thunderstorm Watch Until 3 AM

So I totally missed the earlier round of severe thunderstorms, but see that it produced some wind damage and several large hail reports (including golfball-sized) around North Alabama. Probably will not stay up to post updates on this tonight much. But figured I'd post the watch. Long-term I think I'll just use this to practice forecasting and leave the radar and watch/warning map up on the main site. The real-time updates take more energy and time than I have anymore, for a total volunteer effort.

Here is a preliminary look at the storm reports from earlier this afternoon. All the tornado reports appear to be from Indiana, which was what was expected, that general vicinity, and then down here, a lot of straight-line wind damage reports in thunderstorms. And it looks like the hail overperformed for several places, making it up to golfball size.

This watch for tonight does mention that wind gusts up to 70 mph are likely.

If you get a Severe Thunderstorm Warning from your NOAA Weather Radio tonight, best place to get is a small interior room or hallway on the lowest floor of a sturdy house. But at minimum, stay inside away from windows or anything that easily conducts electricity. If you've got trees around, take that into account. If one fell in the wind, what would the safest place be in your home . . . that's the sort of thing you have to consider.

After tonight, no organized storms for a while, just going to have a lot of heat and a chance for very scattered storms, heat will really ramp up on Thursday and Friday beyond whatever we get by Wednesday.

9:12 PM - Guess I can do a few updates. The NWS Birmingham is emphasizing that these storms moving into Marion and Lamar Counties are dangerous and have been doing widespread wind damage in Mississippi. There was an earlier warning for Muscle Shoals and places up that way, but it has been let go since the storms weakened below severe limits. The air appears to be more unstable a little further south, Marion and Lamar Counties.

10:04 PM - Good news as of right now, the storms appear to be weakening, no warnings currently in effect.

10:06 - And the National Weather Service offices are starting to cancel this watch out already. It does remain in effect for Cullman County. Also for Blount, Walker, Winston, Marion, Lamar, and Fayette.

What you see up there where the TN counties are still included is false - the graphic is out of date, and there's nothing that I can do about that. But understand that Giles, Lawrence, and Wayne counties were cleared from the watch by the National Weather Service in Nashville.

10:23 - All right, and as these storms move into Cullman and Walker Counties, they are expected to stay under severe limits but still be strong thunderstorms that could include wind gusts up to about 50 miles per hour and some small hail.

And I'm running my laptop on battery power as a precaution against the lightning, just in case, because I'm starting to see flashes and hear thunder. You have to use good sense even when you get some organized summer storms . . .

10:29 - Note from the Weather Service in Huntsville that these storms have reinvigorated with especially a lot of lightning.

10:42 - And the cluster of strong thunderstorms continues to pass through places like Cullman and Sipsey...

Tropical Storm Cindy Discussion Number   4

NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL       AL042023

1100 PM AST Thu Jun 22 2023

The satellite presentation of the tropical cyclone has improved this

evening. Deep convection has become more persistent during the past

several hours over the western portion of the circulation. GOES

proxy-visible satellite imagery and recent scatterometer data

indicate the center has moved farther underneath the expanding cold

dense overcast tonight. An ASCAT-B pass at 00 UTC showed an area of

30 to 35-kt winds in the northern semicircle of the cyclone, which

supports upgrading the depression to Tropical Storm Cindy with this

advisory.

Despite some drier mid-level air in the surrounding environment,

modest strengthening is forecast in the near term as the cyclone

moves over 27-28C waters with generally weak vertical wind shear

during the next couple of days. By Sunday, Cindy is forecast to move

under the influence of an upper-level trough extending from the

central Atlantic to the northeastern Caribbean Sea. The increasing

deep-layer shear associated with this feature is likely to cause the

small cyclone to weaken early next week, and the official NHC

forecast shows Cindy degenerating to a 30-kt remnant low by day 5.

Cindy is moving west-northwestward at 285/12 kt. The cyclone is

expected to continue on a west-northwestward heading during the next

several days as it is steered by a subtropical ridge to its

northeast. This track keeps Cindy well to the northeast of the

northern Leeward Islands. The guidance is in fairly good agreement,

and the latest NHC track forecast remains close to the multi-model

consensus aids and is very similar to the previous forecast.
